New professor 2026 at the Faculty of Educational Sciences
One new professor will be inaugurated at the Faculty of Educational Sciences. Here he presents his research.
Gunnlaugur Magnússon, education

My research touches on several areas within educational science but centres primarily on education policy, governance and policy at various levels. I focus in particular on topics such as school reforms and marketisation, inclusion and special needs support, educational philosophy, higher education and teacher training, the various professional groups within schools, and the debate on education. The key findings show how different political ideals regarding the aims education should achieve influence which problems are prioritised and which solutions are regarded as desirable. This may concern how school problems are defined and how different groups of pupils are treated in schools, as well as how teaching in higher education is shaped and defined. It is particularly important to pay attention to how vulnerable groups of pupils and students are affected.
I regard this third task as an important part of my work and frequently participate in the political debate on schools and education through articles, essays and interviews in the media, both in Sweden and in my home country, Iceland. I am the publisher of Skola och Samhälle (School and Society), a debate platform on politics, teacher education and schools; one of the editors of NordSTEP, an academic journal on Nordic education policy; and I coordinate ITERC, an international collective focusing on teacher education research.
