Nobel Peace Prize Laureates attend open conference in Uppsala

The 11–13 December, Uppsala University and Wallonia Bruxelles International will host the Conference Henri Lafontaine to mark the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to Henri Lafontaine. A number of top-level speakers will attend and give public lectures, including 2013 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Attila Zimonyi, Director of Policy and Strategy at OPCW.


The conference gathers a wide range of themes under the title Challenges for a Peaceful World: An Agenda for the XXIst Century, thanks to the participation of a number of world class thinkers, including:

  • Attila Zimonyi, Director Policy and Strategy, OPCW, Nobel Peace Prize 2013
  • Hans Corell, Former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Legal Counsel of the United Nations
  • Serge Brammertz, Prosecutor for the International Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia
  • Rolf Ekéus, Executive Chairman UN Special Commission on Iraq (UNSCOM) 1991-97
  • Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, Vice Chair of the IPCC, Nobel Peace Prize 2007
  • Gunnar Stålsett, Bishop Emeritus of Oslo, Niwano Peace Prize 2013, Member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee
  • Elisabet Fura, Former Judge at the European Court of Human Rights

Topics for the conference include global governance and human rights, justice & reconciliation, development & democracy, finance control & regulation, disarmament, climate change and human vulnerability.

The conference will be held 11–13 December in the University Main Building, Biskopsgatan 3, Uppsala.

Henri Lafontaine was a Belgian pacifist, lawyer, encyclopaedist, and President of the International Peace Bureau. He devoted his life to the promotion of international Law, moved as he was by the strong conviction that dialogue between nations was an indispensable condition to the emergence of a world of peace.
