Jiao Tongu University in Shanghai annually conducts a ranking of the world’s top universities, the so-called Shanghai Ranking (ARWU – Academic Ranking of World Universities). It is one of the most prestigious and renowned rankings of global academic excellence. Out of the more than 20 000 universities in the world, the list compiles the 500 most successful, based on six different indicators, including the number of articles in the Science Citation Index and the Social Sciences Citation Index, as well as the number of Nobel laureates.
Uppsala University is included among the 100 best-performing universities in the world, coming in at position 60 in this year’s ranking. Last year saw Uppsala University claiming position 61.

Two other Swedish higher education institutions also made the top 100: Karolinska Institutet (44th place) and Stockholm University (81st place).
The list is heavily dominated by the US, with Harvard, Stanford and Berkeley taking top honours out of the 15 American universities placed in the top 20, which also includes Oxford, Cambridge, University College London, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, and the University of Tokyo.
