Antibiotics researchers get a SEK 10 million boost

A research group led by Dan I. Andersson at Uppsala University has secured a SEK 10 million grant from the Swedish Research Council for two research projects within the Joint Programming Initiative on Antimicrobial Resistance (JPIAMR).
This type of common funding programme was created within the EU to collect research funding and avoid fragmentation of national resources. The member countries contribute funds to create international partnerships that aim to resolve various important societal issues such as antimicrobial resistance. Similar programmes also exist for research on climate, neurodegenerative diseases and water.
The two funded projects, which will run from 2017 to 2019, will receive a total of SEK 38 million and are led from Tromsø University in Norway and Utrecht University in the Netherlands. They will study the mechanisms of selection and transmission of resistant bacteria in humans and in the environment, and how the development of resistance can be inhibited using combinations of antibiotics.
In 2016, Uppsala University has been very successful in securing grants for antibiotics research from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Research Council Formas and other financiers. This combined with an already strong research environment in the field, and the newly founded Uppsala Antibiotic Centre, strengthens Uppsala University’s nationally and internationally prominent position in antibiotics research.
