Every year, the QS World University Rankings ranks nearly 1,000 of the 26,000 universities in the world. As they publish their ranking list for 2018, Uppsala University can be found in 112th place, as against 98th last year.

“Uppsala University dropped 20 places when this ranking changed its methodology in 2015. We climbed a few places last year, and now we have dropped a few. However, the changes in the underlying indicators are small from year to year. Of course, we prefer to always be among the top 100, but we don’t read too much into occasional ups and downs in these lists,” says Deputy Vice-Chancellor Anders Malmberg.

The QS ranking is based on six indicators, which are weighted as follows:

  • Academic reputation, survey-based (40%)
  • Employer reputation, survey-based (10%)
  • Citations per faculty  (20%)
  • Faculty/student ratio (20%)
  • International student ratio (5%)
  • International faculty ratio (5%)

“A quick analysis shows that ‘academic reputation’ is the indicator where Uppsala University ranks highest, while the indicator ‘international faculty ratio’ is increasing most,” says Anders Malmberg.

In general, US universities have kept their strong standing in the ranking and just like last year MIT, Stanford and Harvard hold the top three places. The QS World University Rankings is the ranking in which Asian universities make their strongest showing. The number of Asian universities among the top 100 has grown from 20 to 25 since last year, which can be compared with the Times Higher Education Ranking which only lists 10 Asian universities among the top 100.

Overall, Swedish and Nordic universities have dropped a few places in the QS World University Rankings 2018. Copenhagen has dropped from 68 to 73, Helsinki from 91 to 102, and Oslo from 113 to 142. Lund University has moved from 73 to 78 and Uppsala University from 98 to 112. However, the engineering-focused Swedish universities fare better. The Royal Institute of Technology remains among the top 100 at 98 and Chalmers University of Technology climbs a few places to 133. Other Swedish universities can be found significantly further down the list, and in general have fallen in this ranking.
