Uppsala University ranked 86th by Times Higher Education

Three Swedish higher education institutions are among the top 100 as Times Higher Education ranks the world’s best universities for 2018. Uppsala University has climbed a few positions since last year’s 93rd place to 86th place in this year’s ranking.
Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2018 is based on 13 different indicators in five categories which are weighted as follows:
- Teaching (the learning environment) 30%
- Research (volume, income and reputation) 30%
- Citations (research influence) 30%
- Industry income (knowledge transfer) 2.5%
- International outlook (staff, students and research) 7.5%
This year, Times Higher Education ranks a total of 1,000 universities around the world. In their 2018 ranking, Oxford and Cambridge take the two top positions ahead of California Institute of Technology, Stanford, MIT, Harvard and Princeton. The US still dominates the ranking with 43 universities among the top 100.
Sweden has three universities in the top 100. The numbers below show ranking and overall score for 2018 (and 2017 in brackets):
- Karolinska Institutet – ranking: 38 (28), score: 75.3 (75.6)
- Uppsala University – ranking: 86 (93), score: 62.2 (61.1)
- Lund University – ranking: 93 (96), score: 61.3 (60.6)
The ranking scores are calculated as z-scores, giving the top-scoring university for each indicator a score of 100, with all other scores reflecting the distance from the best value.
Uppsala University’s highest-scoring indicators are citations (84.6), industry income (79.5) and international outlook (68.8).
THE World University Rankings also list the best universities in a number of scientific fields.
