One in two women in Sweden experience sleep problems. Why is that? How great a role do hormonal variations during the menstrual cycle play? Researchers at Uppsala Biomedical Centre (BMC) are trying to find out.

In the sleep lab, they are measuring breathing and eye movements, as well as the stress levels and mood of participants. The research focuses on the effect of hormones on sleep. Apart from the sleep hormone melatonin and the stress hormone cortisol, the study is looking at the female sex hormone oestrogen.
