The 2024 European Medal for Bioinorganic Chemistry has been awarded to Gustav Berggren, Professor of Molecular Biomimetics at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström. This is the second time a researcher active in Sweden has received the medal.

The EuroBIC medal recognises outstanding young scientists in bio-inorganic chemistry who are conducting innovative research in the field of Bioinorganic Chemistry within European laboratories and actively contributing to the European Bioinorganic Chemistry community”. The prestigious medal has been awarded since 1994 and it is the second time since its inception that the medal has been awarded to a researcher based in Sweden.

“Bio-organic chemistry is very big in Europe, so this is an honorable award for me personally. But above all, I am pleased that the work we do in my research group on hydrogenase enzymes, and also the broader research environment on bio-organic chemistry at Uppsala University, receive this attention," says Gustav Berggren.

The medal is awarded every two years and will this year take place at the closing ceremony of the 17th European Biological Inorganic Chemistry Conference (EuroBIC) in Münster, Germany.
