Donation in support of basic research

Uppsala University has received SEK 50 million as a bequest from entrepreneur Sverker Lerheden. The donation is intended to support basic research.
In spring 2022, entrepreneur Sverker Lerheden donated SEK 100 million to basic research on ecology and genetics at Uppsala University, at that time in the name of his wife Birgitta Sintring Lerheden. That same autumn, he donated an additional SEK 7.5 million for the purchase of an advanced microscope.
Sverker Lerheden and his wife Birgitta Sintring Lerheden visited the University two years ago in connection with the previous donation.
In his will, which was recently communicated to the University, he bequeathed SEK 50 million to the formation of a new foundation named the Sverker Lerheden Foundation for Research at Uppsala University. The Foundation’s purpose is to promote basic research specifically at Uppsala University following a decision by the Vice-Chancellor.
“This is a very generous and very fine gift to basic research, which is fundamental for all other research and for the development of knowledge in general. We are honoured by the trust show in us with this gift, and will ensure that the funds are used in the best possible way,” says Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt.

New jubilee campaign promoting boundless knowledge
Uppsala University will celebrate 550 years on 7 October 2027. Ahead of this occasion, a jubilee campaign is being launched: “Boundless knowledge – since 1477”, whose aim is to further strengthen the University’s research. The goal is to raise SEK 1 billion by 2027.
