A common challenge in disseminating research results across society more quickly, while at the same time adding further expertise to the already strong life science cluster in Uppsala over the long term – these are two of the aims of Uppsala University’s new strategic partnership with Cytiva in Sweden.

Cytiva in Sweden has its roots in Pharmacia Biotech and GE Healthcare and is Uppsala’s largest private employer.

“The University’s collaboration with what is now Cytiva in Sweden goes back a long way,” noted Uppsala University’s Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt upon signing the agreement at Cytiva in Uppsala.

“Ever since Pharmacia was founded, there has been a strong link between our research at the University and the business operations. Over the years, a fantastic life science environment has grown up around this collaboration in Uppsala. This agreement with Cytiva is a way for us to deepen how we work together to strengthen that cluster through both research and skills provision,” he adds.

Valued on both sides

“This is a collaboration that is valued on both sides,” said Inga Ljung, CEO of Cytiva in Sweden.

“We once emerged from the University, but it is not a nostalgic connection. Rather it is very much a living collaboration that is the reason behind us taking this step. In the collaborative projects we already run today, I can see how we concretely and mutually help strengthen each other”, she says, before adding:

"We have a lot in common. For example, we are both used to working on long processes. And that’s just how it is – research and development takes time. But we also have a common challenge in that we need to disseminate our findings across society faster, and that is something I think we can help each other with as we take on more of each other’s challenges with fresh eyes.”

Agreements with a range of companies

Uppsala University has strategic partnership agreements with a range of companies and organisations in order to develop collaborations that contribute to social benefit and innovation while strengthening the University’s research and education.

The new agreement is not just about research; closer ties will also be forged around teaching and student degree projects, for example.
