Professors Johan Elf and Mia Phillipson at Uppsala University has been elected fellows of The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA).

Johan Elf, Professor at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Uppsala University, has been elected Fellow of IVA’s Basic and Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences Division.

Johan Elf is a Wallenberg Academy Scholar and serves on the boards of Uppsala University and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA). He is the founder of two companies: Astrego Diagnostics, which developed diagnostic tests for antibiotic resistance (later acquired), and Bifrost Biosystems, which develops phenotypic screening of libraries of genetically diversified cells.

Johan Elf has also been awarded Uppsala University’s “Hjärnäpplet” prize and the Göran Gustafsson Prize, and is a fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Mia Phillipson, Professor at the Department of Medical Cell Biology, Uppsala University and Co-Director of Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), has been elected Fellow of IVA’s Basic and Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences Division.

Mia Phillipson’s research is transdisciplinary and focuses on the role of immune cells in development, health and disease, with a particular emphasis on wound healing and blood perfusion. She has made discoveries regarding immune cell populations’ contribution to tissue repair, leading to patent applications and the founding of Ilya Pharma, which develops drugs based on probiotic bacteria for local production of immunoactive proteins.
