Four strategic research area projects recommended for Uppsala University

The Swedish Research Council has recommended four projects at Uppsala University for the government’s strategic research areas initiative. The government will decide which research projects will receive funding later in 2026.

“It is very pleasing that Uppsala University is recommended to host four of the 16 strategic research areas that the government proposes to invest in. We are also participating in a further area led by Stockholm University. All in all, I see this as clear proof of the strong and successful research conducted at Uppsala University in several important areas,” says Eva Tiensuu Janson, Vice President for Research at Uppsala University.

A total of 49 applications were received in response to the call for proposals, and the Swedish Research Council recommends that 16 of them be awarded funding. The following four projects at Uppsala University are among them.

Health, life sciences and artificial intelligence: Combating the antibiotic resistance pandemic with personalised medicine. Project leader: Dan I. Andersson, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology. Proposed funding: SEK 11,030,000 in 2027 and SEK 21,843,000 in 2028.

Climate-related research: Solutions Frontier for society’s climate Transformation (ShiFT). Project leader: Gabriele Messori, Department of Earth Sciences. Proposed funding: SEK 7,330,000 in 2027 and SEK 14,830,000 in 2028.

Research on advanced materials: HIER-UPP: Hierarchically Optimised Materials: A Unified Approach for Scientific Excellence, Circularity, and Sweden’s Fossil-Free Industrial Transformation. Project leader: Per Eklund, Department of Chemistry – Ångström. Proposed funding: SEK 6,100,000 in 2027 and SEK 12,400,000 in 2028.

Crisis preparedness and total defence: Effective Crisis Management and Total Defence (EFFECT). Project leader: Daniel Nohrstedt, Department of Government. Participating HEIs: Swedish Defence University and Lund University. Proposed funding: SEK 8,000,000 in 2027 and SEK 15,666,000 in 2028.

Uppsala University is also participating, alongside Linköping University, in a recommended strategic research area on quantum technologies coordinated by Stockholm University.
