National E-infrastructure for Aging Research – NEAR

The National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) is a unique research infrastructure that was founded in 2018.

The ultimate goal is to identify sustainable intervention strategies for better health and develop more effective care for the older population

Aims

• To run a National E-infrastructure for Aging Research
• To promote and facilitate aging research in Sweden
• To increase national as well as international exchange and collaboration
• To enhance research quality and the generalizability of research findings

Uppsala University is participating in NEAR via two databases: the Uppsala Longitudinal Study of Adult Men (ULSAM) and the Healthy Ageing Initiative (HAI). ULSAM and HAI together form a uniquely powerful research platform, combining genetic data from more than 8,000 individuals with over 1,800 carefully collected variables. With genome-wide data covering millions of SNPs, this resource enables researchers to gain new insights into the genetic drivers of common diseases and healthy aging.

NEAR is a collaboration between eight universities, including Karolinska Institutet (Coordinator), University of Gothenburg, Lund University, Umeå University, Jönköping University, Blekinge Institute of Technology, Uppsala University and Stockholm University.

This research infrastructure is deemed to be of national interest by the Swedish Research Council, and receives funding from the Council for Research Infrastructures (RFI).
