I am interested in going into either consulting or research, but I also intend to implement what I have learned in creative ways.
Why did you choose this programme?
– I wanted to study a degree that was broader and combined multiple disciplines. This component of the programme allows us to understand the energy transition from various perspectives which I think is the most effective approach to combating the complex challenge of global warming. My connection to and love for nature definitely contributed to my decision to choose this programme.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University
– Meeting lifelong friends from diverse backgrounds, and the study environment shaped by supportive and accommodating teachers and staff. It also opens many doors for opportunities, from exchange agreements to making connections and gaining practical experience in the field.
What do you find most challenging?
– I used to struggle with achieving a healthy work-life balance and got very stressed before exams. However, with experience as well as stress and time management strategies, I have developed and adopted a much more relaxed mindset.
Tell us about the student life!
– Most student activities in Visby are organised by the student union Rindi which hosts several events and clubs. It is a very close-knit community, and you will always be surrounded by people you know. There is a wide variety of activities to join, from the popular hiking guild to the football club or language cafes, all of which have a very welcoming atmosphere. The studentunion frequently organises themed parties and so-called sittnings, which are celebrations with meals and songs, derived from Swedish student traditions.
What would you like to do after graduation?
– I am interested in going into either consulting or research, but I also intend to implement what I have learned in creative ways.
Which three skills do you think are the most important that you gain from your programme?
– In the first year, there is a methodology where we get to practise various data collection and analysis methods, like conducting interviews, which has proven very useful throughout the programme and will be for future research projects as well. In another course, we also get to practice doing LCAs and writing consultancy reports, which are valuable skillsets for job opportunities in the field. I also personally enjoyed and gained a lot from the environmental science minor courses.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying to this programme?
– The student groups in the programme are relatively small at the programme, so you feel more connected to the teachers and other students, which makes it easier to ask questions and engage. The teachers are also very supportive and willing to help, so don’t be afraid to reach out. The time actually passes by really quickly, especially after the elective semester, so enjoy it while it lasts and take the time to explore the island of Gotland.

Favourite place?
– In Visby, I like the cafes and the botanic garden but on Gotland as a whole, the beaches in Tofta are really pretty as well :)
Where is the best place to study?
– I think the cafes have very calm and peaceful study environments, especially Mirells, and the library at campus where there are tables on the second floor in front of the big window which creates a nice scenic study area.

Why did you choose this programme?
– I chose this programme because I wanted to study something in the geosciences field in Sweden in general. What got me to apply was the mix of different courses which have a very wide range of disciplines. To have this interdisciplinarity is important to me to understand all these different perspectives of energy transition. Another pro argument was the location. I don’t think there are many places like Gotland so it was very tempting to do it.
What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University
– You study at a well-recognised university but still in small classes with a more personal relationship to your teachers. Also, I would say it is all the friends from all over the world that you make by coming and studying here. This is a super diverse place and I’m very happy that I met all these people from all over the place.
What do you find most challenging?
– I like to procrastinate sometimes, so I find it hard sometimes to find the right balance between studying and free time. When I give myself too much free time, then I usually end up studying the whole day later and doing everything at once. Also, sometimes I struggle with the darkness in the winter. But as long as you keep yourself busy, take vitamin D and spend much time with friends, its fine!
Tell us about the student life!
– The student life here is not the biggest, but there is student life! Most things get organised by Rindi, our student union here on the island. The union and their sections organise many different activities like Lamning (our welcoming event), themed parties or sittinings(you can think of it as a themed dinner with activities), but also more cozy events like pumpkin carving or murdermystery masquerade. They also offer different kinds of clubs and guilds. The fire guild for example is something special in my opinion - they always have great shows! I think there is somethingfor everyone at Rindi, and if it’s just to go to the Rindi Castle to hang out there and talk to different people.
What are three things you will do this week?

What are your goals for your studies?
– My overall goal for my studies is to get the deeper understanding of how things work in connection to the energy transition and the environment in general. I want to understand the different perspectives of the processes that are happening all around the world.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying to this programme?
– I would say: be open for the adventure. As someone who was very scared to move to another country not knowing anyone, I can say it was a great decision to do. We have the possibility to study in this medieval town in the middle of the Baltic Sea which I think is quite unique.
One thing to keep in mind is that this is not an engineering degree, so you will study a more interdisciplinary programme and not just technical. Since the classes aren’t that big, you will get a better personal connection to your teachers and classmates which will be super helpful throughout the whole programme. And as the Campus generally is not big, you will get to meet so many people from different countries and programmes!
And also, make sure to bring a wind-proof jacket, it can get very windy here!
Two quick questions
Favourite place in Uppsala?
– It is hard to only have one favourite place here. First, we have the café Babka, which in my opinion has the best pastries for fika. Then we have the gallows and Södra hällarna which both have an amazingview.
Where is the best place to study?
– I think the best place to study is the library. You can either sit on your own in a quiet room or study together at one of the bigger tables. Other than that, I would say a nice Café, in my case Babka, is also a really good place to get work done.
