Meet a student on the programme

Name: Angelika Juhász
From: Hungary

Project managers need both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, and this programme seemed like the best way to achieve that.

How did you choose your programme?
– I was looking for a programme that would let me explore how to create games without strictly becoming a programmer or an artist. I wanted something that let me see behind the curtain, not just the development process, but also the publishing and management sides.

What is it like to be an international student?
– At first, it felt a bit disorienting as I was trying to settle in and manage everyday life in a new country. But because the game design programme includes so many international students, it was easy to find support. Being an international student has been a really positive experience.

What is the best thing about studying at Uppsala University?
– The quality of the education. Game design is a very hands-on major; we do many projects, where we develop games and learn through practice not just theory. As a PM (project manager), it’s especially important for me to gain real experience managing teams, and the programme really supports that.

What is it anything you found difficult or surprising when starting your studies at Uppsala University?
– What I wasn’t prepared for was the emphasis on group projects in this major. It felt challenging at first, but it’s the most direct way to develop the skills I’ll actually need in the industry. The teachers understand that not everyone is used to collaborative work, and they’re incredibly supportive.

Name three things you are doing this week!
– Today is Wednesday, on Monday I was at the workshop since I'm currently in a arcade game production course, I was helping to paint our game. On Friday, we’ll have our ALPHA presentation, where I’ll talk about our game's progress and then I have a meeting for Gotland Game Conference. Tonight, I’m going out with my friends to Rindi Pub Night, they have special cocktails today!

What is your reason for studying, or your ultimate goal?
– I wanted a strong foundation that would allow me to work for large game studios or publishers; to build a reputable name. Project managers need both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, and this programme seemed like the best way to achieve that. So far, I can confidently say that I feel like I’m on the right track to reach my goals.

Describe the student life!
– Student life is really balanced. Visby isn’t a party town, but the student union organises so many events there’s always something to do. Lamningen was my favourite, it’s held at the start of the term, and freshmen spend a week playing games and doing challenges. I met so many amazing people, and most of my closest friends are from that week. If you join us next year, make sure to sign up!

Two quick questions:
What is your favourite place on Gotland?
– The beach by the main campus, it’s so calm and relaxing.

Where is the best place to study?
– The library, with some tea and a good friend.
