Entry requirements
30 credits in Industrial Engineering and Management. Participation in Statistical Quality Control, Quality Management, of which 5 credits should be completed, and either Project Management and Leadership, of which 5 credits should be completed, or Projects and Leadership, of which 5 credits should be completed.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students should be able to
- give an account of the structure and pragmatic approach of Six Sigma,
- give an account of implementation of Six Sigma via the 12 step deployment model,
- apply principles, working methods and tools in Six Sigma through the Six Sigma project model Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control (DMAIC),
- analyse advantages and disadvantages of using Six Sigma methodology,
- apply statistical analysis tools and give an account of how these can be used in a Six Sigma project,
- give an account of how Six Sigma can be related to offensive quality development,
- plan, lead, carry out and document projects according to DMAIC methodology.
Content
The Six Sigma improvement philosophy and its relation to offensive quality development. Principles, working methods and tools in Six Sigma. Application of quality tools such as the seven quality tools (Quality Control, QC) and statistical tools. Analyses and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Measurement Systems analysis (Gage R and R), Capability analysis and application of Defects per Million Opportunities (DPMO). Analysis with Minitab computer support. Project management according to the Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control (DMAIC) methodology.
Instruction
Lectures, exercises, project work in groups and feedback on report writing.
Assessment
Written examination (3 credits), oral and written project presentation (4 credits), and written and oral presentation of assignments (3 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
Other regulations
The course cannot be included in a degree together with 1TG273 Six Sigma.
