Entry requirements
120 credits with Linear Algebra I, Single Variable Calculus, Probability and Statistics and a second course in computer programming. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- measure and analyze networked systems (e.g., social networks) using modern and appropriate mathematical models and methods;
- combine network-analysis methods into an analysis pipeline;
- apply these methods using appropriate software;
- evaluate and compare alternative methods for analysing networks;
- use networks to study physical, biological, or social systems in a project;
- discuss ethical aspects of network science and its applications;
- summarise and discuss recent scientific literature on network science.
Content
Terminology, applications, and fundamental concepts in network science. Roles and positions, centrality measures, graph embeddings, visualization, statistical network models (e.g., Erdős–Rényi, stochastic block models), groups of nodes (e.g., community detection, network motifs), network organization (statistics of local properties, whole-graph descriptors). Processes on graphs (e.g., percolation, epidemic spreading, opinion dynamics). Models of network evolution. Advanced theory (beyond simple, weighted, and directed graphs), e.g., multilayer, temporal, spatial networks, as well as higher-order networks and signed networks. Ethical aspects of network science and its applications.
Instruction
Lectures, laboratory work (both with and without computer).
Assessment
Laboratory work (5 credits). Written exam combined with oral and written presentation of project (5 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
