The course is given in the Language Studies Program and as an independent course. It can also be given in the Language Technology Program.

Learning outcomes

The course gives basic knowledge of linguistic processing of large text collections (corpora). Focus is on practical use of tools for corpus analysis.

On completion of the course, the student should earn the grade Pass and at least be able to:

• account for basic concepts in corpus linguistics at a general level;
• account for different corpora including parallel corpora at a general level;
• account for and to a certain extent master technologies for elementary quantitative analysis of corpora;
• account for grammatical annotation of corpora and its implication at a general level;
• illustrate and account for mono- or multilingual lexical databases and their linguistic organisation.

Content

Existing linguistic corpus resources and search tools. Various types of quantitative analyses such as word frequency, sentence lentgh, and keyword analysis. Grammatical analysis and mark-up of corpora. Corpus analysis as a methodology for linguistic studies. Various types of corpora as well as their use in linguistic research.

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures and laboratory sessions under supervision.

Assessment

The course is assessed through oral and/or written assignments and/or a final exam. The teacher can as part of the assessment require compulsory attendance and active participation. The course requirements are announced in written form at the start of the course by the responsible teacher of the course.

The course may not be included in degree as an independent course if equivalent component has been studied in other course
