Learning outcomes

After completing and passing this course, the student should have the knowledge and understanding to be able to:

  • Explain and interpret the theories, principles and tools of Scrum and Lean,
  • relate the Basic Mechanics of Scrum - Start to Finish, and
  • display an understanding of the various roles within scrum.

Content

The departure point of the course is the basic knowledge in agile project management methods course and game design documentation. The course focuses on providing the students with practical experience and an understanding of the core principles of the production methodology Scrum, which includes lean principles, plan-do-evaluate cycle, data from teams using Scrum. The course evaluates the production methodology’s impact on productivity, morale, quality.

Students will explore the difficulties teams encounter, key strategies for success as well as the theory of the basic mechanisms of scrum: Sprint planning, sequential versus overlapping development and scrum artifacts.

Each student is assigned the role of Scrum Master, to a team carrying out a game development project. During the course, students are expected to implement all the taught mechanisms of scrum such as creating and managing the product backlog, planning the sprint, sprint Backlog, burnout chart, task boards and release planning using scrum.

Students will be given theoretical education in in the various roles authorities and responsibilities of each role involved in the Scrum process.

Lectures, Exercisers/Assignments and Seminars/Workshops.

Assessment

The course is examined by active participation in seminars and discussions, written/oral assignments and final written exam.

The written final exam will assess the students’ ability to interpret the theories, principles and tools of Scrum and Lean. (1.5 Credits)

The students’ ability to use scrum as an agile project management tool as well as their understanding of the basic mechanisms of Scrum is assessed through the following assignments: (6 Credits) Hand in written documentation describing a project to develop a game, including, but not limited to: Burn-out chart and two updates to said chart, as well as a project plan using relevant templates.
