120 credits with Quantum Physics and Solid State Physics I. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • give examples of and describe important research results within the field of functional materials
  • describe the basic principles of basic electronic structure methods
  • identify and relate a number of experimental methods as well as point to and use their basic information content with respect to the electronic structure of functional materials.


The course objective is to learn about important experimental and theoretical methods for studying the electronic structure of functional materials. Functional materials cover a wide range of organic and inorganic materials that have functionality for energy storage, artificial photosynthesis, nanoscience, catalysis, high temperature superconductivity, magnetoresistance etc. The study of electronic structure of these materials is paramount to reach a thorough understanding at the atomic and molecular level.

We offer a combined approach of introducing experimental and theoretical methods that our department is specialised in: photoemission spectroscopy, x-ray emission spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations etc.

Lectures will be given by teachers from our department who are experts in the respective sub-fields.

The examination will be in form of project assignments related to the electronic structure methods.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
