Entry requirements
Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- explain the principles of different methods for producing battery materials,
- evaluate the choice of synthesis for materials used in batteries, based on the nature of chemical bonding interactions and resulting atomic and electronic structures and microstructures,
- propose synthesis methodologies and evaluate the suitability of different choices having regard to equipment, material purity, reactivity, risk level, and required atomic and electronic structure, microstructure and properties of the product,
- synthesise an electrode material via several routes, assess and evaluate the outcomes.
Content
Solid state synthesis, solution-based synthesis, surface coating and treatment, polymers, nanoparticles and nanostructured materials, porous compounds. The advantages and disadvantages of each synthesis approach for battery materials will be addressed and the students will gain hands-on experience in synthesising a key battery material via multiple routes.
Instruction
Lectures, tutorials and laboratory work
Assessment
Written test at the end of the course and/or during the course (3 credits). Laboratory course (2 credits). The final grade is set by the outcome of the written exam, after all mandatory parts of the course have been passed.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
Other regulations
