General provisions

The course is an introduction and exercise in the use of digital documentation methods for material culture within the topics archaeology, bioarchaeology and conservation. In the course the participants will gain skills to work with different digital documentation methods and how these can be used for scientific analysis. The course will also give the student purchasing competence, for recording, analysis, preservation and creative handling of digital methods for archaeology, bioarchaeology or conservation.

60 credits in one of the topics Archaeology, Osteology, Conservation, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Assyriology, Egyptology or Game Design

Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

• Identify and describe current best professional practice in digital documentation methods, and the ethical and legal issues surrounding the use of digital capture and communication.
• Describe different digital documentations methods, their limitations and strengths, and be able to discuss their usefulness in different situations
• Work with a project, individually or in pairs.
• Present a project work in speech, writing and visually.
• Formulate a scientific question or plan for preservation within archaeology/bioarchaeology/conservation with help of digital documentation.
• Apply the technical skill in one or more digital documentation methods required to independently conduct a digital documentation and analysis within archaeology/bioarchaeology/conservation.

Content

The course will introduce students to the theoretical and practical background to methods of 2D and 3D documentation of cultural heritage. The course will also cover ethical, legal, methodological and conceptual issues in digital heritage documentation, in the context of professional best practice. The course will cover documentation methods such as radiography and computed tomography, photogrammetry, structured light scanning, LIDAR and laser scanning, and the use of UAV and drones. The course will cover digital twinning approaches, reconstruction and rendering techniques, data management, dissemination and model sharing, and analytical methods including Geometric Morphometric Methods (GMM) and metrology.

Instruction

Instruction consists of lectures, supervised exercises and tutoring individually and/or in groups. Instruction is given in English and Swedish.

Assessment

Examination is in the form of exercises with exercise reports, as well as oral, visual and written presentation of individual projects.

Examination will be in English or in Swedish.

If there is a special reason for doing so, an examinator may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of a special reason might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Transitional provisions

The course is identical to module 1 of the course Material cultural heritage: documentation and digital methods, 30 hp, 5AR031, and cannot be included in the same degree.
