Commissioned research

Contract or commissioned research involves Uppsala University conducting research on behalf of an external actor, such as a government agency, organisation or company. The collaboration is governed by a written agreement and is based on the principle of full cost recovery – the client bears the full cost of the project. Depending on the agreement, the University may transfer ownership of the research results or grant the client a right of use.

The University deems it important for contract research to also contribute to its own research and teaching. Therefore, the aim is always for the results to be published and used in academic contexts. At the same time, the client’s need for confidentiality and their ability to protect the results before publication is respected, often involving a delay of up to 90 days.

The University is committed to ensuring that any collaboration is carried out with high quality, transparency and in accordance with the applicable law and ethical guidelines. Contract research must not affect public confidence in the University or restrict its ability to conduct independent research.

Through contract research, external actors can benefit from the University’s particular expertise and contribute to the development of knowledge relevant to both society in general and academia.
