Cecilia Josefsson is an Associate Professor (Docent) in the Department of Government at Uppsala University. Her research focuses on political institutions and representation with a focus on gender.

Biography
Cecilia Josefsson is an Associate Professor (Docent) in the Department of Government at Uppsala University in Sweden. Her recent book, Defending the Status Quo: On Adaptive Resistance to Electoral Gender Quotas (Oxfor Univeristy Press, 2024), received the 2025 Victoria Schuck Award, from the American Political Science Association (APSA) for the best book published on women and politics. The book develops the concept of adaptive resistance to analyze how men political elites in Uruguay strategically responded to repeated attempts to a adopt gender quota law.
Cecilia's research explores political institutions and representation from a gender perspective across diverse contexts, including sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and Scandinavia. Her work has appeared in journal such as Comparative Political Studies, Perspectives on Politics, Politics & Gender, International Political Science Review, Parliamentary Affairs, Representation, and Politics, Groups, and Identities.
She earned her PhD from the Department of Government at Uppsala University in 2020. Her dissertation was awarded the 2023 Joni Lovenduski PhD Prize by the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).
Her current research examines gender and political leadership in Sweden, resistance to gender-equitable institutional change, and women’s political representation in the aftermath of crises.
