A deep approach to doctoral supervision

Would you like to broaden your mind as a research supervisor? Do you think that you have been at it for quite some time now supervising doctoral students? Would you like to get familiarized with tools that are really effective? Any desire to take on a new approach to your supervision? If so, taking a set of seminars entitled “A Deep Approach to Doctoral Supervision” could be recommended.

About the seminars
The Division for Quality Enhancement at Uppsala University, Academic Teaching and Learning offers a series of six independent seminars running each study year.
Target Group
This series of seminars targets mainly experienced doctoral supervisors (above all, associate profes-sors/docents and full professors) but also doctoral supervisors who have taken “Supervising Doctoral Students”, as well as some shorter doctoral supervisor training course offered at Faculty level. It is a requirement to be actively involved in doctoral supervision.
Extent and Teaching Qualifications
Every seminar is given independently and corresponds to half-a-day on campus and half-a-day´s work off-campus (e.g., reading an article or part of a book in preparation for the seminar).
That being said, it will be possible for you to single out and take any seminar of interest at your own convenience, in due course of time.
A Certificate of Completion will be issued when a participant has taken a total of five independent seminars.
This set of seminars aims at partly giving international and national perspectives on the doctoral supervisor´s views of supervision and research education, partly making it possible for participants from different subject areas, faculties and departments to share interdisciplinary ideas of doctoral supervision, partly promoting the professional development of the doctoral supervisor, including the ability to make self-reflections.
Seminar and course dates
The calendar contains the dates for the seminars.
26th of March, 10.00-12.00 Group supervision or cohort supervision
In this seminar we look into the potential as well as challenges with group supervision or cohort supervision, based on literature on the topic as well as practical examples. In what situations is supervision in groups suitable? What models for doing so are there, and what are the benefits for the doctoral students? What are the roles of the participants in a group supervision setting? We reflect together and with the help of one or more supervisors with experiences of group supervision.
Guest: Mikael Karlsson, Department of Earth Sciences, UU
The seminar is given in English and on Zoom. Supervisors from Uppsala University as well as SLU are welcome to participate.
23rd of April 10.00-12.00 Challenges in supervision
In this seminar, we will focus on a number of cases related to doctoral supervision, addressing various challenges that you may encounter as a supervisor. It is a chance for you to bring up something you yourself have encountered as challenging, but also to get a wider range of tricy situations to relate to.
If you have experiences of a problem related to doctoral supervision that might be interesting to discuss, e-mail Anette Månsson, before the 15th of April. We will then be able to anonymize the case for use in the seminar!
