A deep approach to doctoral supervision

Would you like to broaden your mind as a research supervisor? Do you think that you have been at it for quite some time now supervising doctoral students? Would you like to get familiarized with tools that are really effective? Any desire to take on a new approach to your supervision? If so, taking a set of seminars entitled “A Deep Approach to Doctoral Supervision” could be recommended.

This course is aimed at

  • Docent
  • Research supervisor

Topic

  • Pedagogy

The Division for Quality Enhancement at Uppsala University, Academic Teaching and Learning offers a series of six independent seminars running each study year.

Target Group

This series of seminars targets experienced doctoral supervisors (above all, associate profes-sors/docents and full professors) but also doctoral supervisors who have taken “Supervising Doctoral Students”, as well as some shorter doctoral supervisor training course offered at Faculty level.

Extent and Teaching Qualifications

Every seminar is given independently and corresponds to half-a-day on campus and half-a-day´s work off-campus (e.g., reading an article or part of a book in preparation for the seminar).

That said, it will be possible for you to single out and take any seminar of interest at your own convenience, in due course of time.

A Certificate of Completion will be issued when a participant has taken a total of five independent seminars.

This set of seminars aims at partly giving international and national perspectives on the doctoral supervisor´s views of supervision and research education, partly making it possible for particip-ants from different subject areas, faculties and departments to share interdisciplinary ideas of doctoral supervision, partly promoting the professional development of the doctoral supervisor, including the ability to make self-reflections.

Teaching and Learning Activities

Presentations by invited speakers (subject-specific experts) in combination with group discussions, exercises and peer conversations between and among the participants. The seminars are going to facilitate active participation.

Seminars 2025

Seminar 1, 9th April 10.00-12.00 Co-supervision
Today, it is self-evident that more than one person is directly involved in the supervision of each doctoral student. The relationship between supervisors in a supervisory team is important for the overall supervision. Co-supervisors (or assistant supervisors) may in some cases have a limited role, contributing with specific scientific perspectives. In other cases, the co-supervisor has the day-to-day contact with the doctoral student and has a large responsibility in the process. In some cases, the co-supervisor is a highly specialized expert, with a long experience. However, in many cases it may be the first experience of supervising on the third cycle altogether, and an important part of the continued socialization into the role of researcher. Based on a recent dissertation by Cecilia Almlöv, SLU, and the participants’ experiences as supervisors, we will discuss the role of co-supervision and the co-supervisor, and the challenges of working in a supervisory team from the perspective of the co-supervisor.
The seminar will be held in English via Zoom. Zoom link and information regarding preparatory readings will be sent out to those who have signed up about a week before the seminar.

Seminar 2, 15th May 13.00-15.00 How to advance research through dynamic interdisciplinary PhD supervision: Lessons learned from the Uppsala University WOMHER graduate school
WOMHER, Uppsala University's Center for Women's Mental Health, is a network of researcher from about 20 different departments and centers at Uppsala university. WOMHER also runs a graduate school. In order to be able to create interdisciplinary research projects that influence women's mental health from different scientific perspectives, it is required that the main and co-supervisors is affiliated to at least two of Uppsala University's disciplinary domains medicine and pharmacy, humanities and social sciences and technology and science.
What are the benefits to research, and what are the challenges that you face in this way of working interdisciplinary in research education? Emma Hovén, director of WOMHER, Department of Women's and Children's Health, Ingela Nyström, assistant director of WOMHER and director of studies for doctoral educations at the Department for information technology and Shima Momeni, coordinator of WOMHER, Department of Women's and Children's Health, will share experiences from supervision in an interdisciplinary setting as a starting point for the participants discussions on the topic.
The seminar will be held in English via Zoom. Zoom link and information regarding preparatory readings will be sent out to those who have signed up about a week before the seminar.

Seminar 3, 28th May 10.00-12.00 Open Science and supervision
What may be the challenges and strengths of Open Science related to supervision? Open Science has been turned into a global movement with a rising number of countries mapping out their routes toward science systems that are more open, inclusive, and accessible. In this process, the supervisor may be an important role model for the PhD students views on Open Science. In this seminar, we will reflect on how to include parts of Open Science in our supervisory settings and the consequences for supervision. Magnus Åberg and Samieh Eskandari, Karlstad University Library, will lead the discussions on this topic.
The seminar will be in English and offered jointly to supervisors from Uppsala University and Karlstad University. Zoom link and information regarding preparatory readings will be sent out about a week before the seminar. Sign-up via Kurt.
