Molekylär epidemiologi

Medlemmarna i forskargruppen molekylär epidemiologi sitter och står i ett fikarum.

Målet med vår forskning är att förstå orsaker och konsekvenser till diabetes och hjärtkärlsjukdom, att identifiera nya biomarkörer och livsstilsfaktorer samt ta fram nya metoder för sjukdomsövervakning.

Forskargruppen kombinerar information från stora befolkningsstudier med moderna molekylära mätmetoder för att studera folksjukdomar såsom diabetes och hjärtsjukdom. De mätmetoder vi använder inkluderar variationer i vårt DNA, cirkulerande biomarkörer som proteiner eller metaboliter, tarmflora, eller utseende eller funktion som kan skattas med bilddiagnostiska metoder som ultraljud eller magnetkameraundersökning. Inom vårt fält drar vi ofta nytta av möjligheten av att kombinera data från flera olika källor, allt ifrån uppgifter i olika register till data från olika typer av undersökningar av försökspersoner till data från covid-19 övervakning.

Vårt mål är att skapa en kreativ och internationellt ledande forskningsmiljö som med hjälp av molekylära metoder ökar förståelsen av sjukdomsmekanismer, hittar nya behandlingsstrategier och förbättrar prediktion av hjärt-kärlsjukdomar och relaterade tillstånd. Dessutom, till följd av covid-19-pandemin, strävar gruppen efter att utveckla nya metoder för att övervaka smittspridning av sjukdomar och försöker etablera ett systematiskt tillvägagångssätt för ökat säkerhet av vaccination i framtida kriser.
