Academic requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Also required is 90 credits in earth science or 90 credits in biology.

If you are not a citizen of a European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) country, or Switzerland, you are required to pay tuition fees. The tuition fee at Uppsala University is SEK 82,500 per semester.
About the programme
The PANGEA programme is an international joint Master's programme initiated and coordinated by the University of Lille (France). Lille's partner universities are Uppsala University (Sweden), the University of Minho (Portugal) and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece) which all contribute with their expertise.
The programme comprises three specialised fields of Earth Sciences. You can choose from Palaeobiology, Geoconservation, and Applied Palaeontology. Uppsala University contributes to the programme with its expertise in Palaeobiology. You will study at two or more partner universities, depending on your choice of specialisation and study plan.
During the programme, you can expect to:
- understand how life has evolved over millions of years and how it adapted to constant changes in the environment and climate,
- combine traditional fossil studies with modern biological methods,
- study the evolution and development of small microorganisms to giant vertebrates.
Degree
The programme leads to the degree of Master of Science (120 credits) with Earth Science as the main field of study and, in addition, an equivalent degree from one of the partner universities.
Content
The first semester will be at the University of Lille where you will strengthen your basic knowledge. After the first semester, you move to the partner university that teaches the specialised track of your choice. The tracks include research in palaeobiology, applied palaeontology (stratigraphy, basin analysis, environmental palaeontology), and geoheritage (science communication, networking, management). If you specialise in palaeobiology, you will study your second and third semester at Uppsala University.
In the last semester, you will conduct your thesis work and you can choose at which of the partner universities you want to do the work.

The courses are taught in English at all the partner universities.

The need for earth scientists is increasing in the labour market, primarily in the environmental and natural resources areas, which are growing strongly nationally and internationally.
