Overview of the workshop
Target group
This workshop is for researchers, teaching staff, doctoral students and academic leaders at Uppsala University. We encourage research groups to attend together, to foster ongoing discussion of these topics.
Content
This workshop in English, via Zoom, examines the ways in which culture affects communication, usually without us being conscious of it. Whether we are foreigners living in Sweden or Swedes dealing with colleagues or students from other countries, we all engage in intercultural communication on a regular basis. This workshop will help you to understand the different values taught by different cultures, how these values affect the expectations we all have when we communicate with others, and how differences in expectations can lead to miscommunication or conflict.
Through a series of short presentations and exercises, you will consider the implicit assumptions that you make when you speak or write to people, what differing assumptions others may make, and how to reduce the chances of miscommunication. The goal is for you to leave the workshop equipped with knowledge and tools that will help you communicate more effectively with a wider range of people.
Workshop leader
The workshop is led by Gregory Garretson, a linguist with decades of experience in language instruction, including teaching for several years in the Department of English at Uppsala University.
