Chemicals and environmental impact
Approximately 19,000 different chemical products are handled at approximately 150 workplaces within the university. You will find substances that affect people and the environment negatively as well as products that are basically harmless.
How do we lessen our impact on the environment and climate when using chemicals?
Share. Check if there is another department or research group that already uses the needed chemical. It is possible to do so via the KLARA Chemical database and risk assessment software
Substitute. Check if there are alternative chemicals that are less harmful but with similar characteristics to use for the same purpose
Coordinate deliveries. Before placing an order, check if anyone else at your department also is planning to order, then place an order jointly
Chemical Safety Officers
Each laboratory has a Chemical Safety Officer, who has the extra responsibility to monitor what chemicals are bought and consumed. The Chemical Safety Officers have a collaborative workspace at Sharepont where they are able to exchange experiences and knowledge on the topic.
Everyone who handles chemical products needs to have knowledge of the products' properties and how they should be handled.
