Insurances for employees

As an employee at Uppsala University you are covered by a personal injury insurance, service group life insurance and a business travel insurance.

Personal injury insurance

As an employee at Uppsala University you are covered by a personal injury insurance during work hours and when traveling directly between the place of residence and the work place. The insurance is managed by Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency).

There is also a complementary personal injury insurance called PSA (Personal Injury Agreement). The insurance company AFA pays compensation under the PSA for loss of income, expenses, and physical and mental suffering. Read the Policy Conditions at AFA Insurance.

When working temporarily at another location

The insurance also applies to temporary work at another location in Sweden. The accident or injury must be directly related to the work and not primarily attributable to your private life. Unlike work at the workplace, when working at another location, the accident must be directly related to the work you are performing. This means that the injury must have occurred while you were performing a work task. In addition, the accident must not be primarily attributable to your private life. Any injuries sustained at home caused by the employer’s property (e.g., a computer) are covered by your own home insurance. For information on the extent to which your home insurance covers this type of injury, you should contact your insurance company.

Swedish state insurance for foreign visitors

Uppsala University provides, through an agreement with Kammarkollegiet, an insurance for foreign visitors, which automatically covers all foreign citizens who participate in Uppsala University's activities, as employees or non-employees. The insurance also covers accompanying family members. The insurance covers emergency medical and dental care protection, but also covers accident protection, home transport protection, liability protection, legal protection and a certain property protection.

The insurance does not cover students at the undergraduate or master's degree program registered in Uppdok.

The insurance is valid around the clock within the Schengen area with the exception of property protection, which only applies in Sweden. This applies if the insured has a Schengen visa. If the insured does not have a Schengen visa or if the insured has a residence permit in Sweden, the insurance only applies in Sweden.

2024-01-01, the definition of those covered by the insurance for foreign visitors was adjusted. What was new is that the insurance is valid until the visitor obtains a Swedish personal identity number. For accompanying family members, the insurance is valid until the family member obtains a Swedish personal identity number. When a person is registered in Sweden (folkbokförd), the person receives a personal identity number. Individuals who are registered have the right to the same subsidized healthcare as Swedish citizens. With a personal identity number, the person also has better opportunities to take out private insurance.

Insurance certificates, a certificate proving that a you are covered by the insurance, will be filled in by the host if necessary.

To report a claim and see complete insurance terms, see Kammarkollegiet's website

Limitations

The insurance reimburses the portion of the patient fee that exceeds 400 SEK.

With the exception of accident cover, this insurance only compensates damage or costs to the extent such cannot be compensated by other insurance.

Property Protection

Damage or loss of your private property is replaced by no more than 20 000 Sek and the deductible in this case is 1500 Sek. There may be the possibility of signing a private insurance in a Swedish insurance company if you want to insure a greater amount of money.

URA Insurance for employees stationed abroad

For employees who are temporarily stationed abroad with an URA - contract, group insurance is provided through the kammarkollegiet. This means that the department or equivalent does not need to take out separate URA insurance for those who are to be posted abroad.

However, the department or equivalent must obtain a certificate from the kammarkollegiet to provide to the employee being posted abroad and any accompanying persons when the URA contract is drawn up.
