Management of compensation for results
Research projects can generate economic returns. In case of commissioned research, it may be that the sponsor wants to reward the originator of a certain research result. For research cooperations, it can be agreed that a collaboration partner has the right to buy or license results or background knowledge generated at the university.
As a starting point, the researcher at the university owns their own results. The compensation for results therefore preferably goes to the researcher that has generated the result. The university has limited opportunities to sell or license results, which is why such transactions preferably take place directly between the sponsor/partner and the researcher. If this is not possible or desirable, Uppsala University Research Intellectual Property AB (UU RIPAB) can be engaged. It should be noted that the engagement of UU RIPAB requires compensation corresponding to the costs for UU RIP AB for managing the results. Regardless, the forms for transfer, licenses and compensation need to be properly regulated in the agreement between the university and the sponsor/partner and accepted by the involved researchers.
If there is a case for compensation for results or background information, consider who the compensation should go to. In order to ensure that the compensation ends up in the right place, the issue must be dealt with in the research agreement.
