The University's strategic talent supply will be reviewed in light of a declining trend in the number of scientific citations. This was decided by the University Board on 19 February 2025.

“It is worrying that Uppsala University's share of the Swedish scholarly articles that are among the 10 per cent most cited publications is decreasing compared with other universities in Sweden. We are in seventh place in the country. I am definitely not satisfied with that,” says Anders Hagfeldt, Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University.

The University's operational plan for 2025 already includes a mandate to the Vice-Chancellor to develop a plan for how the University should work on scholarly publishing to increase its scholarly impact. As part of the process, the disciplinary domains have been tasked with delivering proposals to the Vice-Chancellor aimed at increasing scholarly impact.

This work is now being complemented by the inclusion of strategic talent attraction in the plan for increased scholarly impact to be presented to the University Board in April 2025.

Key issue

These tasks have been issued in light of the University’s downward trend in citations, which is reflected in Uppsala University's Annual Report 2024. A basic prerequisite for maintaining and strengthening the University’s standing as a world-leading university is recruiting and retaining the best teachers and researchers.

“Young researchers are our future. It is important that Uppsala University remains attractive to younger researchers, and strategic talent attraction is therefore one of the most important issues for the University,” says Anders Hagfeldt, Vice-Chancellor of Uppsala University.

The supplementary instructions from the University Board also include analysing how the University’s career paths, focusing on recruitment and promotion to professor and senior lecturer, contribute to the University’s standing as a world-leading university.
