Kick-off for revising our goals and strategies

Work is now underway on the next generation of the University’s mission, goals and strategies. The plan is that in January 2026 there will be a proposal that can be circulated for internal consultation before a decision is made by the University Board in June 2026. Photo: David Naylor.
The University Board plans to decide on revised mission, goals and strategies for Uppsala University in June 2026. For this purpose, the Vice-Chancellor appointed a steering group and a working group in May 2025 to produce a proposal.
The current Mission, Goals and Strategies document for Uppsala University was adopted by the University Board in December 2019.
The revision now is based on project terms of reference and a schedule that the Vice-Chancellor adopted on 27 May 2025. In addition, the Vice-Chancellor decided on a working group to produce a proposal for the revised document and a steering group for the work.
The revision of the University’s mission, goals and strategies is to be based on ongoing strategic change and development efforts within the University, such as the 2024 quality and renewal research evaluation (Q&R24) and the University’s new initiative in the form of the Uppsala University Future Institutes (UUniFI, see article via links below).
In this revision, it is important to strengthen the University’s capacity for renewal and its prospects for meeting future challenges. The revision process is intended to contribute to a more proactive approach that supports the University’s ambition to continue being an leading research university on the international stage. Work on the revision will also include University-wide strategic considerations for education.
The revision will take into account strategic decisions at the national and international levels, including the Swedish Government’s latest Research Bill.
The new Mission, goals and strategies are to have a time frame of 2026–2030.
In the work to produce a proposal, both internal bodies within the University (e.g. the University Management Council, committees, support functions) and external partners will be given the opportunity to provide input.
