Uppsala University has decided to rent office and examination premises at Dag Hammarskjölds väg 17 from autumn 2026. The offices will be used by the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. At the time of writing, discussions are in progress about which parts of the organisation will move in.

The decision to rent the building at Dag Hammarskjölds väg 17 means the University is moving back in. There are probably a number of members of staff who have both studied and worked in the building.

The building was opened in 1936 and originally housed the Department of Pathology and the Department of Hygiene and Bacteriology at Uppsala University. It was used for teaching until the early years of this century. The building consists of a central unit with two wings and has just over 6,100 square metres of floor space.

The courtyard formed between the buildings is open towards Dag Hammarskjölds väg.

Total renovation

The property will be completely renovated before Uppsala University takes possession. The parts of the building that are listed, including the facade, roof, entrance hall and auditorium, will be preserved, but everything else will be replaced. The property owner Stenvalvet aims for the renovation to tie in with the building’s original appearance in terms of colour and choice of materials.

“Inside, it will be a completely new building,” says Anna Sjöström, project manager for the project at the Office for Medicine and Pharmacy.

The renovation is expected to be completed in time for the University to access the building in autumn 2026.

Two separate parts

The building will have two separate parts, the larger part being office space for research and education.

The other part is located in the basement and will contain special exam rooms for students with special needs.

Study spaces and dining hall

The premises will also provide study spaces for students.

“There is a shortage of study spaces at Uppsala University Hospital, so this is a welcome addition. The building is perfectly located close to the University Hospital, the Rudbeck Laboratory, BMC and the Segerstedt Building,” says Sjöström.

The building will have a dining hall for the office section with access to outdoor seating. The idea is that the building will provide a conducive setting for increased collaboration between the departments and groups that move in and that the premises will favour meetings between researchers.

“It is intended to be a building characterised by research,” says Sjöström.

Discussions are currently underway with various departments, units and research groups at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy about the possibility of moving into the premises.
