The Vice-Chancellor has set aside SEK 108 million to upgrade the wireless network across all of Uppsala University. This work will begin at Uppsala Biomedical Centre (BMC) and the Ångström Laboratory and all in all is expected to take a couple of years to complete.

University IT Services (UIT) will be focusing a lot of its resources on upgrading the University’s under-dimensioned wireless network in the next couple of years. The upgraded wireless network, strengthened with over 4,000 new access points, will improve the work environment for everyone at the University, including visitors, according to UIT.

“Having a well-functioning wireless network has been and continues to be an important matter for the University, and as a support organisation it’s our job to work actively to solve the University’s IT problems,” says the University’s IT Director Måns Östring.

Planning the actions and initiatives for the installation of all the new equipment is happening in parallel with the configuration of a much larger wireless network for improved security, easier upgrades and better lifecycle management.

“How the network is used looks different these days. In the past, staff generally connected to the network via a network cable and it was mainly visitors and students who used the wireless network. Nowadays, everyone moving around in our facilities expects adequate connectivity everywhere, on all campuses,” says Christer B. Andersson, Deputy IT Director and head of the project’s steering group.

With the help of Akademiska Hus and the Buildings Division, along with multiple partners, access points at the Ångström, BMC and English Park campus areas have already been mapped and planned.

After completed measurements and planning at Ekonomikum, the rest of the campus will be mapped during 2025.
