Wireless Network on Our Campuses

To better support students, staff, and visitors who use our digital services, Uppsala University has decided to upgrade and expand the wireless network across all campuses in Uppsala. The goal is to provide more reliable and faster internet access for everyone at Uppsala University.

Installation

  • Rudbecklaboratoriet
  • Universitetshuset
  • Individual smaller buildings

Finishing work

Campuses where the installation is completed and control measurements are performed:

  • Gustavianum
  • Segerstedthuset
  • Carolina Rediviva
  • Gamla torget
  • Geocentrum
  • EBC
  • Blåsenhus
  • Engelska parken

Work is finished

Verification measurements have been completed and show full coverage at the following campuses:

So far, we have installed:

  • 3,095 new Wi‑Fi transmitters
  • 124,5 km of network cable

What can I do to get better Wifi?

Keep your computer updated and connected to eduroam - preferably using client management via UIT.

Troubleshooting eduroam

Reports of network problems or special requests regarding network should be sent to itsupport@uu.se.

The overall plan is that all campuses should be completed by August 31. This means that all campuses must have undergone radio planning, installation of new access points, and post‑installation checks of the wireless network.

University IT Services received reports of various issues with the wireless network across campus. These problems were experienced at nearly all university locations, and despite troubleshooting efforts, many users continued to face difficulties.

A Dedicated Project to Address Network Issues

To tackle the problems more effectively, a dedicated project was launched. Experts from different areas worked together to identify possible causes of the network issues. The project also involved external consultants who specialise in network technology.

Fixes in Internal Systems

The team discovered several issues within the university’s internal network systems, affecting all campuses. One particular issue made it difficult for Mac computers to connect to Eduroam, the university’s Wi-Fi service.

In the autumn of 2024, the project team implemented fixes to address many of these internal problems. After that, some users reported an improved experience with the wireless network.

Campus Maps and Signal Testing

In collaboration with Akademiska Hus and others, the project team created detailed maps of many of the university’s buildings. These maps help to understand how the layout, materials, and infrastructure of each building affect Wi-Fi signal strength.

Signal planning will be carried out at every campus, in close dialogue with local staff. Based on these discussions, plans for specific upgrades and installations will be implemented and carried out.

All campuses will receive upgrades to the wireless network.

Vice-Chancellor’s Decision to Upgrade

In May 2025, the Vice-Chancellor approved a university-wide initiative to strengthen the wireless network. This includes upgrading and expanding the university’s Wi-Fi equipment. The initial investment of SEK 108 million will be funded centrally. The decision also gives the central IT department full responsibility for both wired and wireless networks at Uppsala University.
