Download the new VPN solution – Forticlient replaces Cisco

For the new VPN solution, you need to use the same MFA key as is used for the university’s Microsoft services.
Uppsala University is taking another step to strengthen IT security by introducing a new VPN solution. The new solution, Forticlient, is now available to all users and replaces the previous VPN solution from Cisco.
If you are not currently using a VPN client, you don’t need to do anything. However, if you are using Cisco, you need to install Forticlient using either:
- Software Center (for Windows computers)
- Self Service (for Apple Mac computers)
To connect using Forticlient, you need to authenticate your university identity using the MFA key used for Microsoft services, such as collaborative workspaces in Sharepoint Online ore OneDrive. This is a different MFA key from the one used for Cisco.
Cisco will continue to work during a transitional period
During a transitional period extending over the summer, the previous VPN solution from Cisco will remain available.
However, it is important to install Forticlient as soon as possible. This is to ensure that Forticlient works for you before our previous Cisco solution is completely phased out.
Important information for Apple Mac users
For Mac users, a specific limitation applies: macOS can only have one VPN service installed at a time. This means that the existing Cisco service will be automatically uninstalled when Forticlient is installed.
Mac users should therefore plan their installation for a time when they are not dependent on a VPN connection.
Windows computers can have both VPN services installed at the same time. However, after summer, and once the service is phased out, Cisco will be automatically uninstalled from all computers.
