About the course
A lecture is higher education’s oldest form of learning and teaching activity, and a large portion of teaching in the modern university is arranged in a lecture format. But what are the aims and goals of lecturing in today´s university? How can lectures be designed to capture the student audiences’ interest, engage and encourage interaction and supports learning? How are lectures aligned with other learning and teaching activities arranged within a particular course?
The course is intended for both the experienced lecturer as well as those with less practical experiences. The overarching goal is to provide a chance for participants to reflect over their lecturing practice, develop lecture material and delivery skills in practical terms, to be inspired, energized and to gain confidence in the role of lecturer.
Target group
University teachers and other staff with teaching responsibilities at Uppsala University, who are interested in developing their personal lecturing skills. The number of course participants is limited to 24.
Prerequisites
Applicants for the course must have completed the Academic Teacher Training Course for university staff (five weeks work-time equivalent) or other equivalent basic pedagogic training.
Scope
The course corresponds to the equivalent of one-week (5 days) work-time. The course includes five scheduled 3-hour sessions on-campus, one or two classroom observations and individual tasks.

Classroom observations and workshop in the Studio Blåsenhus. Collegial feedback and dynamic development of participants own lecture material and delivery techniques.
Course goals
Upon completing the course a participant is expected to
- be able to critically reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the lecture format within one’s own disciplinary and teaching context, grounded in relevant literature regarding higher education pedagogy and/or subject didactics,
- be capable of planning and delivering lectures in forms that motivate students to attend, promotes student learning, and takes into account the diverse conditions and needs of the current student group
- be familiar with relevant resources at Uppsala University that may be beneficial for on-campus or recorded lectures and select appropriate alternatives for development and delivery
During the course participants will receive peer feedback on one´s own lecturing via classroom observations in pairs or trios. In a case where a participant does not have any planned lecturing during the duration of the course the classroom observation will be replaced with another appropriate activity.

Attendance and course certificate
A minimum of 80 % attendance during formal sessions, active participation during sessions, participation in classroom observations and completion of set course tasks are required in order to receive a course certificate of completion. Attendance during the first formal on-campus session is mandatory.

A number of journal articles and other suggested readings will be presented during the course. Participants will also be invited to identify readings relevant for their own perceived requirements.
