Doctoral students and researchers

The basic requirement for applying for a scholarship is that you work for Uppsala University (unless otherwise stated in the scholarship requirements). Most scholarships are open for applications at the beginning of every semester. See the timeline on our website for dates.

What should be attached to the application?

The following are examples of some of the most common appendices:

  • List of qualifications/CV
  • Project/research description: A brief 1–4 page description of the research you are conducting and the purpose of the scholarship for which you are applying.
  • Cost estimate: should include the total amount for which you are applying and your various expenditure items with the amounts specified. Examples of expenditure items are living costs (within the time period), materials, operating costs, travel and accommodation. You cannot be awarded a larger amount than you have applied for.
  • List of publications: specify all of your publications. This may also include (unpublished) material from conferences.
  • Travel plan (for research trip): the plan should include a brief description of the purpose of the trip, time periods and planned content.
  • Statement from supervisor/subject representative (recommended): Statement on the impact of the scholarship on your project/travel/research.

The scholarship must be used within the tenure

The recipient of a travel scholarship must use it within the specified timeframe. If you cannot use your scholarship for the allocated purpose, you must contact us at stipendier@uu.se before your granted period expires so that we can investigate possible solutions.

If your scholarship is to be monitored, this will be indicated in your decision letter. See your scholarship page for more information.

Are you on sick leave, parental leave or elected representative?

If you are on sick leave, parental leave or a full-time elected representative of a nation or student union, you can apply to pause your obtained scholarship. Such an application is submitted via the scholarship system, and evidence is required of your reason for pausing the scholarship.

Extension of a scholarship

If your scholarship can be extended, this will be indicated in its scholarship requirements. You apply for an extension by reapplying for the scholarship during the application period immediately following the end of your scholarship period.

Some scholarships are for relatives of donors. For these scholarships, kinship needs to be proven. The kinship should be described in a family tree that includes each generation from the donor, or the person described in the scholarship requirements, through to the applicant. Years of birth and death for all persons should be specified. In the family tree, both parents should be listed for each generation with their first and last names (including unmarried surnames) and years of birth and death.

See our sample family tree template (PDF). Pdf, 91 kB.

The genealogy must be fully substantiated, i.e. including your own personal data. The genealogy must be certified by two people, including a signature, printed name and contact details, and they must be prepared to verbally certify the accuracy of the description.

The application must also be accompanied by a population registration certificate for your parents specifying their relationship to you. To order such a certificate, you must call the Swedish Tax Agency and describe what the certificate should contain. The certificate will then be posted to you, so make sure you order it in good time. Please note that all appendices must be attached to your application and that no appendices may be added after the deadline.
