Exchange studies via university-wide agreements
As a student at Uppsala University, you have the opportunity to take courses for one or two semesters at one of our partner universities. Since we have an exchange agreement, the are no tuition fees to be paid.
Who can apply for exchange studies?
The university-wide agreements at Uppsala University are available to all students, regardless of the department or faculty you are studying at. To apply for exchange studies through Uppsala University's university-wide agreements, you must meet the following requirements:
- It must be your intention to credit your exchange studies and to take your degree at Uppsala University.
- You must be registered for 30 higher education credits at Uppsala University at the time of application. If you are currently on an academic leave of absence that is registered in Ladok, you will be granted an exemption. Attach the decision certificate to your application.
- You must have attained at least 60 registered higher education credits at Uppsala University at the bachelor’s level or at least 45 credits at the master’s level by the time of departure. Study results are checked continuously.
From the application round in autumn 2024 you need to be a registered full-time student at Uppsala University for the semester before your exchange begins. If you apply for an exchange during your last semester before your degree, and do not plan to study the semester before the exchange begins, you do not meet our requirements.
Students with a residence permit
Students studying in Sweden on a residence permit should check with the Swedish Migration Agency that participation in exchange studies or traineeship outside Sweden does not affect their residence permit. Please refer to the Swedish Migration Agency's website.
How many times can I apply?
You can be on an exchange for up to 360 days at the bachelor level and up to 360 days on the master level. This means that you can be granted one or several exchanges during your studies. Exchanges also include if you have been granted shorter or blended courses, or a traineeship period within the Erasmus+ programme. We base our assessment of study level on your current studies at Uppsala University.
Where can you study as an exchange student?
The Unit for International Mobility has agreements for exchange studies with partner universities on most continents. Spots at partner universities in Africa, Oceania, and South America are primarily advertised in the spring. Spots at partner universities in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and North America are preferentially advertised in the autumn. See which partner universities are available and read reports from previous exchange students in our exchange agreement database.
Different universities in each application round
Our offer of exchange places is always at a selection of our partner universities, never at all of them. We publish the selection of universities for each application round on the page about available universities when the application opens.
