Application instructions for freestanding courses abroad

On this page, you will find instructions on how to apply for freestanding courses and summer courses abroad through the ENLIGHT network

Application

In your application, you will need to include your academic Transcript of Records. The transcript of records can be obtained from Ladok. If you have studied at other Swedish universities, please attach a national transcript of records.

If you have completed a full Bachelor's degree at a foreign university, we also request that you include this document.

Students studying in Sweden on a residence permit should check with the Swedish Migration Agency that participation in freestanding courses outside Sweden does not affect their residence permit. Please refer to the Swedish Migration Agency's website.

Fee-paying students who are enrolled in a full-time study programme at Uppsala University, are eligible to apply for freestanding ENLIGHT courses abroad.

To know if you can take the course as part of your 30 credits study load next semester, please consult with your programme coordinator before applying. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure to communicate with the department to know if the freestanding ENLIGHT course can be included the programme.

The credits for the course have the same fee as your other credits at Uppsala University. This means that if you can include the course in your study programme (for example by taking 25 credits in Uppsala, and a 5 credit freestanding ENLIGHT course), you will pay the tuition fee for 30 credits as usual.

If you, for example, want to take 30 credits in Uppsala next semester, and an additional 5 credits at an ENLIGHT university, Uppsala University will charge for the additional ECTS credits before the semester begins, based on your tuition fee. You, as a student, have to ask for this invoice at feemaster@uu.se, and indicate “ENLIGHT extra course” in the title of your email.

Transfer of credits

Before applying for a course, we recommend that you speak with your academic advisor or study coordinator at your department to explore the possibilities of transferring credits.

Once you have completed your course at the partner university, you will be issued a Transcript of Records. Afterwards, you can apply for the transfer of credits. Please note that transfer of credits does not happen automatically; you must apply for it yourself.

On this page you can find more information on the process and the documents required for applying for transfer of credits.

Selection process and notification

If you apply for a freestanding course or summer course through ENLIGHT and meet the application requirements, you will be offered the opportunity to enrol in the course, provided there are available places If we receive more applications than there are available places, a lottery will be conducted to ensure everyone has a fair chance of securing a place in the course.

After the application period has ended, all applicants will receive a notification regarding the outcome of their application.

If you are offered a place in the course, you have a few days to accept or decline the offer, and you must do so within the communicated timeframe. It is important to monitor your email, including your spam folder, and respond promptly. If you do not respond, it will be treated as though you have declined the offer.

What happens when you accept a course?

You will be nominated to the host university that offers the course you want to take. After that, you will be contacted by them, and they will send you the application information. Please carefully read through all the instructions that are sent to you. For questions regarding the application, you should first contact your coordinator at the Unit for International Mobility unless otherwise instructed.

Once the host university has received and processed your application, you will receive an admission decision. The processing time for courses varies between host universities, so it may take some time before you receive your admission decision. Please note that while we offer the opportunity to enrol in a freestanding course, it is always the host university that decides whether you meet the requirements for admission or not.

Once you receive your admission decision, you can start planning for your course, including activities such as searching for accommodation and transport to your destination.

Accommodation and travel

Students who are taking a freestanding course abroad need to arrange and finance accommodation and travel to and from the physical part of their blended mobility on their own. You can apply for a grant from Erasmus, which can be used for travel and accommodation.

You can apply for the Erasmus grant for blended mobility if you are admitted to a course or programme that combines physical mobility (for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 30 days) with a mandatory virtual component either before, during, or after the physical mobility.

Insurance

All students who are to attend a course where a component is held abroad are insured through Uppsala University and covered by Kammarkollegiet's Student UT insurance. Students studying within the EU/EEA should, in the first instance, make use of the EU Health Insurance Card, which can be obtained free of charge from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan).

For assistance around the clock in the event of an emergency that cannot wait until the Kammarkollegiet switchboard is open: contact Falck Global Assistance at +46 8-587 717 49.
