Apply for a Swedish personal identity number

Staying in Sweden for more than one year

If you plan to live in Sweden for more than one year, you must register in the Swedish Population Register. Everyone who is registered in the Swedish Population Register receives a personal identity number (personnummer) as an identifier.

You use your personal identity number when you communicate with government authorities, private companies and banks, as this number is your identifier in Sweden. Being registered in the Population Register also grants access to subsidised Swedish healthcare. Just state your personal identity number when you go to the doctor and you will only pay a small fee.

Many administrative processes in Sweden, like opening a bank account or purchasing home insurance, are easier with a personal identity number.

Notify the Swedish Tax Agency

Once you have your Swedish personal identity number, please send it to our academic registry at ladok@uu.se, along with a scan of your passport. We will update your information in the University's records.

Staying in Sweden for less than one year

If you are admitted to studies lasting less than one year, you cannot get a Swedish personal number. However, if needed, you can apply for a coordination number at the Swedish Tax Agency.
