Frequently asked questions about digital note-taking support

Why does Uppsala University use digital note-taking support?

Digital note-taking support allows you to work more independently with your notes compared with individual note-taking support provided by another student. You are not dependent on another student sharing notes and can instead review, process, and supplement the material yourself within the tool.

The aim is to give students who have difficulty listening and taking notes at the same time better conditions to participate in the teaching and create a more equitable study situation.

Will individual note-taking support still be available?

The goal is to gradually introduce digital note-taking support across all programmes and courses and make it the primary form of note-taking support.

In some cases, individual note-taking support may still be offered. This may apply, for example, to teaching conducted in languages that the tool cannot support, or in other situations where digital note-taking support is not considered an appropriate form of support.

Do I need to inform the teacher that I use digital note-taking support?

No. You do not need to inform the teacher yourself about your support needs. The department’s contact person for targeted study support will ensure that teaching staff are informed when digital note-taking support is being used in a course.

The information provided concerns the use of note-taking support in the course, not the identity of the student using the support.

Can a teacher refuse the use of digital note-taking support?

Yes. The teacher has the authority to determine when recording is inappropriate. This may include, for example, examinations and assessments, internships, or teaching sessions where sensitive information is discussed.

If recording is not permitted during a particular teaching session, note-taking support will not be available for that session.

Can I use the tool if I do not attend the teaching session?

No. Digital note-taking support is intended to support your own participation in teaching activities. You must therefore attend the session yourself to use the tool.

Can recordings or notes be shared with others?

No. Digital note-taking support is an individual educational support measure. Material created using digital note-taking support is for personal use only and must not be shared with others.

Do I need to sit close to the teacher for the audio recording to work?

If the teacher is using a microphone, your location in the room is generally of little importance. If no microphone is available, it is beneficial to sit close to the person who is speaking.

How are recordings and notes stored?

The recording is stored in Genio Notes together with the transcription, summary and any notes you create within the tool.

No separate audio file is created that can be downloaded or shared. You can listen to the recording and work with the material in the tool for as long as your licence remains valid. If you wish to keep your material, you must save it before the period following the expiry of your licence ends.

What happens if I do not comply with the terms of use?

If there is reason to believe that the terms for using digital note-taking support have not been followed, you will be invited to a meeting with a coordinator for targeted study support. The purpose of the meeting is to follow up on the situation, clarify the applicable terms and, if necessary, review your support arrangements.

Any measures taken will be assessed based on the circumstances of the individual case.
